Pediatric Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of disability and death in children and adolescents in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the two age groups at greatest risk for TBI are age 0-4 and 15-19. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that almost one half million trips to the emergency room are made each year for children up to 14 years old for TBI’s.
Pediatric brain injuries are caused by the brain being subjected to physical trauma. Some of the most common forms of trauma causing the head injuries are:
- Automobiles whether as a passenger or a pedestrian;
- Bicycle accidents;
- Sports injures; and
- Abusive treatment such as being shaken by a day care worker.
A child’s brain may be more easily injured than an adult brain. Pediatric head injuries may also be different from adult head injuries in the length of time necessary for them to heal, with pediatric injuries often taking a longer period of time. While some pediatric head injuries may be mild, many are severe and cause serious and long term damage.
Having a child diagnosed with a pediatric brain injury can be a parents’ nightmare. As a parent, the anxiety about your child’s health and well being is coupled with the worries about his future.
