Which Law Firm Handles Takata Airbag Injuries?

The Takata airbag recall remains one of the most expensive and expansive automotive recalls in history. Approximately 70 million defective airbags and airbag inflators have been subjected to recall in a variety of makes and models. Unfortunately, there have been 15 confirmed deaths in the United States due to defective Takata airbags.

While airbags are designed with good intent and to protect the driver and passenger in the event of a car accident or collision, airbags that have been manufactured with a defect can cause catastrophic damage and even death.

Who makes the Takata airbag?

The Takata Corporation was a Japanese automotive parts company that specialized in manufacturing various automotive components, including airbag systems, seat belts, steering wheels, and other safety-related products. Founded in 1933 in Japan, Takata grew to become one of the world’s largest suppliers of automotive safety systems.

The company gained significant attention and unfortunately notoriety due to a widespread issue with their airbag inflators. Defects in Takata’s airbag inflators led to a massive recall of millions of vehicles globally. The flaw in the inflators caused them to potentially rupture upon deployment, resulting in the release of metal fragments or shrapnel into the vehicle’s cabin, leading to injuries and fatalities.

Due to the scale of the recall and the severity of the issue, Takata faced extensive legal actions, financial penalties, and eventually filed for bankruptcy in June 2017. Key assets of the company were then acquired by Key Safety Systems, a Chinese-owned automotive safety components supplier. The remnants of Takata were rebranded as Joyson Safety Systems, operating under a different name and ownership after the acquisition.

Why were Takata airbags recalled?

Takata airbags were subject to a widespread recall because of a fundamental flaw in their inflators.

The problem lay in the design of the inflators, which relied on an ammonium nitrate-based propellant to activate the airbag during a collision. However, exposure to heat and moisture could cause this propellant to deteriorate and become unstable.

As this degradation occurred, there was a risk that the metal casing containing the inflator could rupture upon airbag deployment, leading to an explosion. This rupture would release sharp metal pieces or shrapnel into the vehicle, posing a significant danger to passengers. Due to the potential for injuries or even fatalities from this defect, numerous vehicles equipped with Takata airbags were recalled globally by various car manufacturers. The recall aimed to replace these faulty airbags to ensure the safety of vehicle occupants.

What kind of injuries can a defective Takata airbag cause?

Takata airbags, when affected by the defect in their inflators, can cause a range of injuries to vehicle occupants during deployment. These injuries vary in severity and can include:

Cuts and Bruises

Upon airbag deployment, fragments from the ruptured inflator can create sharp edges or shrapnel that may cause cuts, bruises, and abrasions to the face, neck, chest, and other body parts of the occupants causing a variety of personal injuries.

Eye Injuries

Shrapnel and debris released during the airbag deployment can lead to eye injuries, including lacerations, abrasions, or more severe damage to the eyes, potentially causing vision impairment or blindness.

Facial Injuries

The forceful deployment of the airbag and the release of fragments can cause significant facial injuries, such as fractures, lacerations, and trauma to the facial bones and soft tissues.

Head and Neck Injuries, Including Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries

The impact of the airbag deployment, coupled with the presence of sharp fragments, can cause head and neck injuries, ranging from concussions to more severe trauma, including neck sprains, fractures, and in extreme cases, traumatic brain injuries.

Internal Injuries

In rare cases, the force of the airbag deployment and the release of debris might lead to internal injuries, such as internal bleeding, organ damage, or chest injuries due to the impact.

In the most severe cases, the injuries sustained from a defective Takata airbag deployment have resulted in fatalities due to the impact of shrapnel or severe trauma.
